Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.  According to 2014 data from the Center for Disease Control 29.1 million people are diagnosed with diabetes or 9.3% of the population.  However 8.1 million people are undiagnosed currently.  Diabetes can be diagnosed by doing a simple blood test and is often checked with a routine physical.

Diabetes is essentially a broken pancreas, in other words, your pancreas is not regulating the amount of insulin your body requires to take up the sugar from the food you eat and is lying in the blood stream instead of placing the sugar in the muscle cells for energy.  Having elevation of blood sugar leads to end organ damage of the eyes, kidneys and nerve cells and is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease.  Of course, genetics predispose you to developing diabetes, but the best way to prevent diabetes is to maintain normal body weight, good nutrition and a daily exercise regimen.  If you have been diagnosed with diabetes you and your health care provider can develop a regimen of diet, exercise and medication to help with this impairment within the body to prevent complications from elevated blood sugar.
